Les Grand Montets Skiing - Pistes of Chamonix

Grand Montets is situated in Argentire, just passed Chamonix town centre and is North Facing.

Grand Montets is the largest pisted ski area in the Chamonix Valley and also the highest ski area in Chamonix at 3300m meaning that the conditions are usually better throughout the season, and it is the first resort to open and the last one to close during the winter season, allowing good ski conditions until May!

From the bottom of the resort you have a choice of two lift systems to take you up the mountain. The most popular is the large lift from the main system.

This takes you directly to the mid station where you can access the rest of the mountain with ease by then taking either the modern Bochard gondola to 2800m, the updated 6 man Herse chair taking you to 2600m or the large lift system Les Grands Montets téléphérique taking you to the very top of the summit at 3300 to enjoy some challenging off piste and black runs along the glacier.

The second choice of lift system from the bottom is to take the chair, which is situated just behind the main lift station. This is not a direct lift to the mid station, you then have to take another chair and ski down a blue run to get you to the mid station, but it can be the preferable way to go in peak times, as often the main lift station can have long queues’, whereas the chair usually has none.

From either the Bochard or the Herse, there are so many skiable areas. The top is glaciated and very steep, making it challenging and the off piste here is some of the best in the World on a fresh powder day, however caution should always be taken as areas can be prone to avalanche during different times of the year. If you want to experience the fresh powder in Les Grand Montets then arriving for the first lift up in the morning is a must as the area is a playground for all the diehard experienced back country skiers.

A popular area is the Lavancher Bowl giving you 1000m of decent and is found to the skiers left from the Bochard lift. From here the Logon chair lift then takes you to the top of the ski park, where you can ski parallel to the park, to bring you back to the mid station. From the summit you are able to ski a 2000m vertical drop back down to the bottom lift station and can be done either on or off piste!

Les Grande Montets has the only ski park in the Chamonix valley and has a good selection of black, red and blue kickers, not to mention a selection of boxes and rails. There is even a boarder cross track which is fun to race down with your friends. The park manages to cater for all levels. There are some impressive black jumps which is fantastic to watch the pros hitting them, and there is also some small stuff to hit if it’s your first time at the park.

There are several restaurants in the Grande Montets. The most popular being the Lognan Self service bar. It is situated right by the mid station, so is a great meeting spot for large groups and has plenty or seating areas both inside and out. During the spring months, it is a real suntrap in the afternoon and a great spot to enjoy a beer with a fabulous view. Other restaurants include the Plan Joran for lunch and snacks at the top of the Plan Joan chair lift and also the Refuge Logan, which is a popular restaurant accessed only by black runs from the top of Grande Montets. This is a rustic chalet refuge and booking ahead is recommended.
