Chamonix is one of few European year round resorts which spreads itself several miles along the valley floor with breath taking views everywhere you look.
In the town centre you will find hoards of shops which are stocked with everything you can imagine. From the glamour of Channel to the numerous gifts shops and everything in-between Chamonix has something for everyone. There is ski-hire available at every turn and the smell of great food oozes from the vast number of bars and restaurants.
The restaurants in Chamonix range from fine dining Michelin star restaurants, bars which serve pub grub, bistros and takeaways.
If it’s traditional Savoyard cuisine you’re after you can find it in abundance in the town centre and La Caleche never fails to deliver. Inside you will find literally thousands of quirky ornaments everywhere you look and the strongest smell of fondue you can imagine. The wine list is several pages long and the menu includes raclette, bistro style meals, set menus and as mentioned a fondue to do die for. The feel of the place is very French and relaxed and the restaurant is deceptively huge making it great for large parties.
For a more relaxed pub grub type eatery The Jekyll is a must and is defiantly the place for live bands, homely food at more than reasonable prices and a friendly service which we have found to be unrivalled in the Valley. The live music often continues into the small hours and requests for your favourite songs are usually taken to add to the fantastic feel of the place.
Atmosphere in the town centre also offers a great à la carte menu each night and has a vast selection of good quality wine to choose from. The prices are less than you would expect considering the location and the service you receive and is highly recommended a visit.
For takeaways and fast food you will find lots to choose from throughout the town. Many are little quaint places that serve through hatches and windows into the cold street outside. Poco Loco has an upstairs eating area but you need to be flexible to find a seat as the upstairs is tiny and literally has a few long bench seats and stools. That combined with lots of people in large ski jackets makes for an interesting easting experience. Beluga’s does a great Panini and if it’s a hot crepe your after midnight express can satisfy your needs.
Chamonix has lots of great bars and clubs to suit everyone.
For après ski Chambre Neuf immediately springs to mind. In high season the bar gets absolutely packed out spewing people into the street. Once the live bands start around 6pm the place only gets busier making for a fantastic party and unforgettable evening.
Other great bars and pubs in town include Le Pub which is a favourite amongst locals, La Terrasse which is situated right in Chamonix centre and Bar’d up, which is situated on a small side road just off the main street which is open every day of the year and always offers a warm welcome.
Chamonix has 2 clubs too which are open till around 4am. These are Le Tof and Le Garage. Both draw a huge crowd during the busy season and have themed nights on each week.
The Skiing in Chamonix consists of 5 main areas which are Les Houches, Brevant, Flegere, Grand Montets, Le Tour - Vallorcine
Each area offers a different level of skiing for everyone. At an altitude of 3300m Grand Montets often benefits from the best snow conditions and is usually the last place open to ski late on into the spring. The skiing here is considered to be more challenging although there is a beginner slope and also the Panda club at the bottom for children
For a more gentle experience on the piste you may want to try Le Tour. The wide open pistes are usually quiet and the Vormaine area which is situated at the bottom has 3 drag lifts which are perfect for complete novices and children.
