This stunning town situated in Switzerland on Lake Geneva makes for a great day trip from Chamonix. Montreux is most famous for its Jazz festival which is hosted every year in July for two weeks.
The town in nestled in the Alps, with a beautiful backdrop where you can enjoy shopping, a long lunch, or a lazy day by the lake.
The scenery alone is worth the trip to Montreux but we also have some recommendations for a day trip there.
Chilton Castle- This is the most visited historic building in Switerland, which is situated on a rock on the banks of Lake Geneva. For hundreds of years, the passage of ships on the lake was controlled by this castle. If you fancy a unique venue for a party, it is possible to rent out this magnificent castle.
Boat trip on the lake- Lake Geneva (Lac Leman), is the largest lake in central Europe. You can enjoy a boat trip on this amazing lake from Montreux on the 582km2 body of water taking in the stunning scenery as you go.
Rochers de Naye- Where you can enjoy a senic trip on panoramic carriages from Montreux to Rochers de Naye via Glion to the Gent de Jaman to the summit. This gives you a view over the lake and Montreux from 1,650m above the town. Spectacular scenery not to be missed.
The Montreux Jazz festival- This event is probably what Montreux is most famous for and is an event not to be missed if you are in the area in July. The festival started in 1967 and has been host to some amazing performers such as Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Deep Purple – where smoke on the water was inspired!
The Christmas market- Every year in Montreux the Christmas market comes to town from the 24th November – 24th December. This is an event not to miss if you are in the area and the best way to get you into the Christmas spirit. The town is full of market stalls and you can even have the chance to meet father Christmas.
